The delegation of the Poznan University of Technology (PUT) led by Rector Prof. Tomasz Lodygowski visited the Kiev Polytechnic Institute named for Igor Sikorsky (KPI) on April 15-16. The program of the visit of Polish professors and scientists to Kiev included several events that were very important to both universities.
The first event was the round-table conference entitled “Igor Sikorsky Kiev Polytechnic Institute–Poznan University of Technology: New Horizons of Cooperation”. The round table concluded with the signing of a quadripartite agreement between the KPI, PUT, Tucana Engineering Warsaw LLC and Progresstech-Ukraine LLC.
The conference was followed by the grand meeting of the Academic Council at which PUT Rector Prof. Tomasz Lodygowski was awarded the title of KPI Honorary Doctor.
KPI Rector Mikhail Zgurovsky introduced Tomasz Lodygowski to the audience. Prof. Tomasz Lodygowski is an expert in many areas related to numerical analyses and simulations of complex mechanical processes, using most sophisticated properties of materials and states of loadings. Among other things, scientific attention was focused on testing materials in the different range of strain rates and temperatures (using the Hopkinson bar set installed in labs), and using these properties in numerical analyses; simulation of biomechanical systems (segments of spine, designing optimal implants, simulation of angioplasty operations); safety of structures under blast loadings; and the optimal design of structures. As the leader of a scientific group, Professor Lodygowski promoted seven Ph.D. students and helped greatly four students achieve habilitation and professorship positions. He was also the supervisor of two honorary degrees offered by Poznan University of Technology to Profs. Piotr Perzyna (IPPT PAN Poland) and George Voyiadjis (LSU USA). From the very beginning of his career Professor Lodygowski has been very sensitive to the promotion of cooperation, mutual understanding and friendship between scientists and students from many countries. He has visited more than 20 countries, signing many international agreements (today PUT boasts over 200 different international agreements). Rector Lodygowski was the inventor of new directions of studies such as bioengineering, aviation and cosmonautics, as well as 16 directions that are offered to students in English. In recent years Rector Lodygowski has paid a lot of attention to the establishment of cooperation with Ukrainian higher education institutions, particularly universities based in Kiev (KPI), Lvov, Ivano-Frankovsk and Kharkov.
Over the years Rector Lodygowski has been making great efforts to expand cooperation with KPI. He participated in the launch of a joint double master's degree program, joint seminars and conferences. Owing to Rector Lodygowski the exchange of students has started, the mobility project within the framework of the Erasmus+ Program is well underway, cooperation between libraries and the editorial boards of scientific journals is expanding, the first steps in joint research on space technologies, biomedical engineering and other areas have been made. In consideration of his outstanding achievements in science and a great personal contribution to the promotion of cooperation between the two universities, the KPI Academic Council awarded Tomasz Lodygowski the above title, as well as a diploma, memorial badge and gown.
After receiving the awards, the new KPI Honorary Doctor delivered a traditional lecture about the books and people, which inspired him to engage in scientific creativity and work hard.
The ceremonies continued. Another highlight was the presentation of master's degree diplomas in Mechanical Engineering to the first graduates of the KPI Institute of Mechanical Engineering and PUT, namely Leonid Yashkin, Mikhail Yevtushenko and Bogdan Titarenko who studied in accordance with the double master's degree program. The agreement on this program was signed by the rectors of the two universities in August 2017, and the KPI students began studying at the Polish university at the start of 2018.
After the presentation of the diplomas, the rectors ratified amendments to the Agreement on Double Master's Degree Program.
In conclusion Teofil Jesionowski, PUT Vice-Rector for Lifelong Learning and International Education, spoke about his university and new horizons of cooperation between PUT and KPI.
“Cooperation with Poznan University of Technology helps Igor Sikorsky Kiev Polytechnic Institute become part of the European Higher Education Area, and fosters our students in becoming the specialists who have the knowledge and competence of European engineers,” Mikhail Zgurovsky said, concluding the grand meeting of the Academic Council. “For this, tremendous credit goes to the Rector of Poznan University of Technology, Tomasz Lodygowski, and we appreciate deeply his endeavors.”
The visit of the PUT delegation to KPI ended on April 16 with the lecture entitled “Non-Integer Order Calculus for Modeling of Mechanical Processes”, which Prof. Wojciech Sumelka, Deputy Director of the PUT Institute of Structural Engineering, delivered to the students of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, as well as with the lecture “Quantitative Strategies in Poland”, which Prof. Adam Lodygowski, Head of Quant Strats Poland and GM IBCM/CUSO CRO Poland, read to the students of the Faculty of Management and Marketing, Faculty of Informatics and Computer Science, Faculty of Applied Mathematics, and the Institute for Applied System Analysis.
