Ukraine, Israel formally sign free trade pact

Recently, Ukraine and Israel have signed the free trade agreement, which will afford new opportunities to Ukrainian exporters. About 80% of Ukrainian manufactured goods would have been exempt from import duties since the entry of the pact into force. And thanks to the exemption of some 70% of import tariffs on Israeli manufactured products, high-tech investment import into Ukraine will be within the realm of possibility.

However, let’s not forget that trade pacts create commercial opportunities but do not guarantee sales. Ukrainian firms and workers face tough competition at home and abroad. Inadequate investment in educating Ukrainian children and retraining and retooling workers is a higher tax on Ukraine's competitiveness than tariffs and quotas hindering its access to foreign markets.
